Jack in the Box Wiki

Curly fries are a variation of french fries characterized by their helical shape, cut from whole potatoes using a specialized spiral slicer. They are sold as a side item at Jack in the Box, where they are seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, and spices.[1] They were added to the menu in 1991.[2]

Origins[]

The creation date of the curly fry has not been pinpointed, but its existence can be traced back to the 19th century.[4] Oklahoma City's Dolores Restaurant and Inn served curly fries as "Suzi-Q potatoes" in 1938.[5] In the 1980s, Washington company TaterBoy had the debut of the industrial "Curley Fries".[4] The first company to produce curly fries in mass quantities was Simplot, which used the specific blend of spices that became popular.[6] The restaurant chain Arby's added curly fries to its menu in 1988, and may have been the first company to utilize Cajun-style seasoning on their "Curly-Q Fries".[7]

Incidents involving Jack in the Box curly fries[]

In 2003, a man in Greenville, South Carolina shot at a Jack in the Box drive-thru window because the manager wouldn't change his regular fries to curly fries.[8] In 2021, a Jack in the Box employee in Houston, Texas fired a gun twice at a car in the drive-thru during a dispute over curly fries.[9]
